How we can operate in a safe way with Face2Face fundraising during Covid-19

Background

A risk reduction plan for the 2020 F2F campaign during the COVID-19 pandemic was developed to ensure that staff operates in a safe way.

Due to the extreme situation in the world with the pandemic this document was developed as the first thing when we initiated planning for the campaign.

During a Face2Face (F2F) fundraising campaign we have employees and/or volunteers out on the street or venues, trying to contact and talk to potential donors/members (sign up for recurring donations) and identify best practices.

Please note that this is not an event per se, but that there is limited human interaction happening. The safety of our campaigners is our top priority and to that end we have started with a risk analysis and developed a set of instructions to ensure that we can operate in a safe way with F2F fundraising during Covid-19.

How to operate safely

In Sweden the safety regulations for campaigners within F2F have always been very high and strict, some of these restrictions are relevant when coping with Covid-19, and would continue even if the health authorities will lift or ease how we can operate. The regulations are there to prevent incidents to happen.

  • Depending on how the Covid-19 situation is later this year, the campaigners will work outside to reduce risks of disease transmission.
  • The campaigners will make sure to keep a distance to the one the people that are passing by and the ones they are speaking to.
  • They will of course make sure that they are not in a too crowded place where they can’t control their positioning.
  • The campaigners will approach people with care (make deliberate choices when approaching), scan the situation so that no one in the public is caught off guard or might be erratic. Scanning can also help to see if someone perhaps looks ill or clearly tries to avoid the situation.
  • The campaigners will not contact elderly people or other people that look like they can be part of a risk group – this might mean that the recruiters themselves need to finish the conversation if they understand that the person they are talking to is considered to be in the risk group.
  • If the person that has been approached in any way feels un-ease then the campaigner is instructed to end the conversation.
  • The campaigners should never address more than one person at the time (no gathering of a small crowd).
  • Shaking hands with customers or with colleagues will be prohibited
  • We will provide staff with hand sanitizers and give them time to go wash up more regularly.
  • The tablet needs to be cleaned by the campaigner, and can only be handled by he or she (the person that will become a member can sign with bank id or sms-pin).
  • The campaigners can not come to work if they feel even slightly ill. In Sweden, during Covid-19, the workers are getting paid sick leave from day one.
  • When looking for and scheduling recruiters to locations (where to work) we chose a primary location and then an optional location in case the first for some reason doesn’t work. The alternative locations need to be close to the first option so no unnecessary time will be spent on buses and trains.
  • We will only schedule locations that are within the vicinity of a subway since busses at times can get too crowded.
  • We schedule campaigners on locations that are close to the central, or on places that  minimize the time spent on public transportation.
  • We closely monitor the situation and follow the guidelines from the public health authorities.
