Projekt:GLAM 2019/Problematisk information 2018
Projektet syftar till att undersöka hur samlingar från arkiv, museer och andra kulturarvsinstitutioner, som är problematiska på olika sätt, bäst kan inkluderas på crowdsourceplattformar som Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons och Wikidata. Denna workshop är en del av projektet om Problematisk data som genomförs i samarbete med Enheten för digital förmedling på Riksantikvarieämbetet. Resultatet kommer även ingå som en fallstudie i projektet FindingGLAMs.
The project aims to investigate how collections from archives, museums, and other cultural heritage institutions, that are problematic in different ways can best be included on crowdsourcing platforms such as Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons, and Wikidata. This workshop is part of the project on problematic data, which is carried out in collaboration with the Department for digital mediation at the National Heritage Board. The result will also be included as a case study in the project FindingGLAMs.
En workshop om Problematisk data
Hur ska arkiv, museer och kulturarvsaktörer förhålla sig till data i samlingarna som kan uppfattas som kränkande, provocerande eller rasistisk? Samlingarnas dokumentation, den data som beskriver innehållet är som tidskapslar från förr, ofta fyllda med material som idag ses som problematiskt. När digitalt material tillgängliggörs kan det vara ett bra tillfälle att se över historiska beskrivningar och uppdatera materialet så det relaterar bättre i samtiden. Genom fria licenser och möjligheten med crowdsourcing kan data tillföras och rättas under en längre tid. Den förbättrade metadatan, till exempel genom översättningar till flera språk, kan sedan återföras till institutionerna.
Dagen inleds med en nulägesanalys av föreläsare som har erfarenhet inom området eller har arbetat med att tillgängliggöra samlingar med problematisk data. På eftermiddagen tar vi fram riktlinjer och förslag på processer som stöd för arbetet. Vilka processer och verktyg behöver vi utveckla för att säkerställa en god hantering av problematisk data? Hur kan denna typ av problematiskt material bäst representeras i strukturerad form?
Inför eftermiddagens workshop efterlyser vi erfarenheter och synpunkter från museer och institutioner som arbetat med att tillgängliggöra material med problematisk karaktär.
Målet för dagen är att ta fram riktlinjer för hantering av problematisk data.

A workshop on Problematic data
How should archives, museums, and cultural heritage institutions relate to data in their collections that can be perceived as offensive, provocative or racist?
The documentation of the collections and the data describing the content, are like time capsules from the past and can sometimes be seen as problematic. When digital material becomes available, it can be a good opportunity to review historical descriptions and update the material so that it better relates in our time. Through free licenses and the possibility of crowdsourcing, data can be added and corrected over a long time. The improved metadata, for example through translations into several languages, can then be returned to the institutions.
The day begins with a current analysis of lecturers who have experience in the field or have worked with making collections of problematic data available. In the afternoon, we present guidelines and suggestions for processes that support the work. What processes and tools do we need to develop to ensure good handling of problematic data? How can this type of problematic material be best represented in a structured form?
Before the afternoon's workshop, we are looking for experiences and views from museums and institutions that have worked to make materials of a problematic nature available.
The goal for the day is to develop guidelines for handling problematic data.
